Asia-Pacific: Upcoming Cracker Projects and Capacity Outlook

Between 2018 and 2025, the Asia-Pacific region is expected to add 33 MMTPA of ethylene capacity. China will have the largest share (57%) with about 18 MMTPA from 2019-2025. As many as 15 new crackers are being constructed or planned. Major capacity is planned for coal-to-olefins (CTO) facilities. About 2.4 MMTPA of ethylene – 13% of the total – is expected from CTO process.

Ethylene demand in the Asia-Pacific region is estimated to increase to 75 MMTPA by 2025 at a CAGR of 4.7% from 2018-2025, whereas supply is estimated to increase at CAGR of 4.2% in same period. The region will need imports to meet its demand.
