Refinery Competitiveness: 6 of 23 Indian Refineries Considered to be in a Strategically Strong Position

India’s has a refining capacity of 4.8 million barrels a day and 23 refineries in total. India’s light-oil processing capacity is 13% of refining CDU capacity, whereas conversion capacity is 45%, and hydro-processing capacity is 55% of refining CDU capacity. An increasing demand for petroleum products impacts refineries’ gross margins. 

The refinery competitiveness score helps refiners plan strategy. The score considers 14 parameters, shown in the spider chart above. Of the 23 refineries, six have a competitiveness index score of more than 8. These refineries are considered to be in a strategically strong position. Fourteen refineries have a competitiveness index score between 5 and 8; these refineries should plan on establishing long-term strategies. Three refineries have a competitiveness score of less than 5; these refineries immediately need to take steps to improve their rankings in the index.
