Green Hydrogen Analysis - India
India, the third largest emitter of carbon dioxide (CO2) globally, has recently taken numerous initiatives to reduce its carbon footprint and to attain net zero carbon emissions by 2070. Green hydrogen can help India achieve this goal by reducing the carbon footprint of its transportation sector, as well as its heavy industrial sectors including refineries, steel, and iron. In August 2021, the Prime Minister of India laid out a 25-year plan for developing green hydrogen in the country and expressing that India should emerge as a global hub for producing and exporting green hydrogen.
The Indian government is planning a large-scale development of green hydrogen to meet its climate targets. The map depicts the major states in India where green hydrogen production is taking shape at a rapid pace. One of the major projects is in Karnataka, which will be developed by the ACME group. The plant is expected to have a captive solar power plant and a green hydrogen production capability of 1200 MTPA. IH2A – India Hydrogen Alliance has also created several hubs across the nation to develop green hydrogen production. IH2A is expected to add 23 MTPA of production capacity. In the first phase, the hub plans to bring 150 MW of electrolyzer capacity online and will reach 500 MW megawatts in the second phase.
